You can discover the mystery and beauty of opals yourself by visiting the Altmann & Cherny opal store, an Australian owned family business established in 1948. As a visitor, you’ll be given an educational talk on where opals are found, how they are mined, and how to value them. Also, on display in the Sydney store you can see the world famous black opal known as “The Aurora Australis,” weighing 180 carats and valued at one million Australian dollars. This opal is particularly rare because of its large size (3 inches x 1.8 inches), and strong, vibrant colors.
