The Okavango Delta epitomizes everything that’s best about an African safari, providing the perfect prelude to our Waterways of Southern Africa itinerary. The Okavango offers the possibility of every kind of game activity; drives, walks, and water-based expeditions by boat or dugout canoe, as well as scenic flights (which is the only way to get you into and out of our camp in the delta). The Okavango is one of the few natural topographies seen from space, with water spreading along what looks like an arm, then seeping into the hand and fingers as floodwater travels down from the Angolan Highlands to fill this unique inland delta. Come with us into this watery wilderness teaming with wildlife for your first taste of an African safari!
Depart home
Begin your African adventure with an overnight flight to Johannesburg, South Africa.
Arrive in Johannesburg, the hub of southern Africa
Touch down in Joburg or Jozi, as it’s affectionately known, South Africa’s city of gold. A Vantage Representative will be at the airport to meet, greet, and escort you to your smart hotel in one of Joburg’s leafy city suburbs. Rest and recover from your journey for the rest of the day.
Travel to the Okavango Delta, in Botswana
After breakfast, you’ll return to the airport in Johannesburg for a less than two-hour flight to Maun, Botswana’s gateway into the Okavango Delta. The only way to reach our camp in the heart of the delta is by small charter plane — usually a 6 or 12-seater. This short flight gives you an incredible aerial overview of the Okavango Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an Outstanding Universal Value as a pristine wetland delta. You’ll either see pockets of water and patches of permanent marshland or a landscape filled with glistening water, as the floodwater spills across the landscape. The Okavango Delta is a complex ecosystem that supports vast numbers of resident and migratory animals and birds. Your accommodation is in a luxury tented camp with a safari suite on a wooden deck raised off the ground. You have your own veranda to sit and stare out at this wilderness full of big game. Enjoy your private en suite bathroom, but be sure to check out your outdoor shower too. This camp offers day and night game drives (on and off-road), game walks, and seasonal water activities in a mokoro dugout canoe. We start our safari with an afternoon game drive with just 6-people per vehicle, a ranger, and a tracker (commonly from the local area, with innate knowledge of the bush). Dinner is back at the lodge.

Explore the remarkable Okavango wilderness
With the possibility of seeing game from land, water, and air, the Okavango can be described as the best all-round safari destination in Africa. Our camp is right in the middle of it all, on an exclusive private concession, giving us the freedom to drive off-road to follow the wildlife.
Our morning and afternoon activities depend on the time of year and the level of flood water, which spreads out across the floodplain in front of the lodge. Whether a game drive or a guided walk or boat excursion in a mokoro canoe, we’ll look out for elephants, buffaloes, lions, and leopards, as well as a whole variety of antelopes, like magnificent-horned sable, water-adapted lechwe, and shy sitatunga. Let’s not forget hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife!
Included Features:
Discover the wildlife of this unique ecosystem
Our two activities today are again determined by the terrain and water levels as we explore more of the Okavango Delta and its wildlife. If you opt for a game walk, you’ll be enthralled by the knowledge of your ranger, who could have been born within the Okavango. You’ll learn how to cure all ills with plant infusions, how to identify animal spoor (tracks), and how to avoid being detected by dangerous game, like elephant and buffalo.
If there’s the chance of a mokoro canoe ride, do give it a try! They are not as wobbly as they look. Your boat-man will push you silently along through ponds of water-lilies and crystal-clear water channels, while elephants and antelopes graze on the riverbanks.
Scenic flight over the Okavango to Maun. Then, onto Johannesburg to start base tour
After breakfast, we’ll look down upon the Okavango wilderness once again from our scenic charter flight back to Maun. From here, we’ll take a flight to Johannesburg, South Africa, and join the base tour on day 2.
